New Play Initiatives

The Playwriting Center is invested in new work development, and periodically partners with Emory faculty and professional playwrights and playmakers on innovative projects and initiatives.

Currently, Breaking Ground provides a safe space for theater artists, faculty and students to experiment and innovate; 4:48 challenges four playwrights each summer to write a new play in 48 hours.

One highlight amongst previous projects was Emory's partnership with the Alliance Theater to make Atlanta one of the 16 hub cities for “365 Days/365 Plays”. These were 365 micro plays written by Suzan-Lori Parks, who joined with Bonnie Metzger in a year-long 16 city simultaneous world premiere. Fifty-two Atlanta theaters, large and small, produced work for this 2006-2007 festival.
