Major & Minor

The Theater Studies department offeres a Bachelor of Arts in Theater Studies, Minor in Theater Studies, and a joint major in playwriting. No audition is required.
Majors in Theater Studies often choose to double-major in other fields.
To declare the major or minor, please contact John Ward to complete a declaration form and select an advisor.

NOTE: Major and minor requirements have changed effective September 2011. Requirements for those who declared before September 2011 can be found here.

Major Requirements (effective Sept. 2011)

Core Requirements

  • Introduction to the Major: Reading for Performance (*210)
  • Interpretation and Performance: either Acting: Fundamentals (*120), Acting: Scene Work (221), or Acting: Speeches and Monologues (222)
  • Literature, History, Aesthetics: History of Drama and Theater I (215), History of Drama and Theater II (216), and Aesthetics and Criticism of the Theater (*410)
  • Administration and Design: either Principles of Design (230) or Theater Administration (*240)
  • Production: Stagecraft (*130) and Theater Practicum (200) (one credit)
  • One semester of Theater Majors Colloquium (396)—A one-credit, one-hour weekly course, currently held in the spring semester

Departmental Electives

Three other courses (twelve credit hours) in the department (or approved by the Department for the major) are required. One will be 200-level or higher and two must be 300-level or higher. Of these, one course (four hours) must be in the concentration area of literature, history, and aesthetics. THEA *100 does not count toward major or minor.

Total: 42 hours for the major

Minor Requirements (effective Sept. 2011)

Core Requirements

  • Acting: Fundamentals (*120)
  • Stagecraft (*130)
  • Theater Practicum (200) (one credit)
  • Reading for Performance (*210)
  • One semester of Theater Majors Colloquium (396)—A one-credit, one-hour weekly course, currently held in the spring semester

Departmental Electives

  • Two other courses in the department (or approved for the minor) are required. One must be 200-level or higher and one must be at the 300-level or higher.

Total: 22 hours for the minor
